Make sure your team has the communication skills to best represent your company
OCA is offering two, three-hour interactive communication workshops on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Leading the programs will be Anthony Huey, President of Reputation Management Associates, national key-note presenter and consultant to numerous construction firms. Participants have the option to attend one or both sessions, held at OCA, 1313 Dublin Rd., Columbus, 43215. Registration cost per person is $249 for one session or $399 to attend the full day. Lunch is included for all participants.
Making your message clear: speeches, presentations and meetings will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
This highly interactive session will teach attendees at every level of business more effective ways to communicate — with clarity and purpose —
to co-workers, customers, the public and a variety of others they deal with every day.
This is for your technical experts such as: field managers, superintendents, project managers, executive project managers – your business development team – and your more experienced team members running the company.
Participants will gain an understanding of:
• how people interpret body language and what to do about it
• how to increase the likelihood someone will remember what they said
• how to communicate more smoothly
• how to utilize inflection, voice, gestures and more to create an engaging, memorable conversation
• make a point in any conversation
• reduce nervousness
• effectively respond to any question
• avoid the “deer in the headlights” look
• gain “think time” when you most need it
• and much more!
Communicating in a Crisis will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This highly interactive session provides information on how to deal with the media – and 11 other audiences – during a crisis. Attendees learn how to respond to questions briefly and directly, with honesty and candor, and how to control the flow of information.
Whether it’s your field or office managers, this is for anyone on your team that would be called upon to respond to the media or other audiences during a crisis on or off the jobsite.
Participants will gain an understanding of:
• key differences between an emergency response plan and a crisis communications plan
• why having a crisis communications plan is vital and what should be in it
• 12 audiences to communicate to during a crisis
• ten key points to successfully communicating during a crisis
• key tips to surviving a news interview
• five performance traits to possess during a news interview
• how social media has transformed crisis communications and how to use it
• how to gain “think time” while responding
• what makes a good message and how to stay on it
• why an organization should have a reputation-saving crisis communications philosophy

Future Leaders' Forum 2019/2020
Nearing the halfway point of the 2019/2020 Future Leaders' Forum program the current class has had some great experiences. A full day session at OCA kicked off the program followed by a day long session at ODOT. During the Legislative Advocacy Day the value of advocacy was shared by Michelle Holdgreve and George Palko. During that visit they got to spend an uninterrupted hour
of Q&A with the Speaker of the House Larry Householder, the Minority Leader
of the House Emilia Sykes, the President of the Senate Larry Obhof and the
Minority Leader of the Senate Kenny Yuko. The back and forth was democracy in
action. Next week most of the group will be at the OCA Winter Conference. |

Estimating Competition Searching for a Project
Every year students participating in the OCA Estimating Competition compete using a previously-constructed project from one of our members. Last year’s students estimated the Columbia Road Relocation project, presented by the John R. Jurgensen Co. We are now looking for a new project for the 2020 competition. If you are willing to attend a couple of meetings to discuss your project and give a presentation to those attending the competition, please contact David Rule at 614-488-0724. The competition dates are February 14 & 15.
