OCA / Operators Settle New Agreement
Please be advised that OCA’s Labor Relations Division settled with the Operating Engineers, Local 18 last Friday night for a new 3-year Heavy Highway agreement. Though it must still be ratified by both OCA and the Union membership, the new wage increase total is $1.35, which is a 2.8% increase in year one. The wage and benefit distribution, effective May 1, 2017 is: Wage - +$1.00; Health & Welfare - +$.35. Please pass this information on to your payroll department. You have two options. You can trust that the agreement will be ratified by both OCA and the Union membership and make the raise effective today, or you may wait until formal ratification and make the raise retroactive to May 1st at that time. Ratification by both parties will take several weeks. The choice is yours.
If you have any questions about the new agreement, please contact Mark Potnick in the OCA office.
Operator Apprentice Evaluation Program- Please Participate!
OCA’s ongoing efforts to address current and future workforce development issues in the construction industry include evaluation and improvement of our union apprenticeship and training programs. OCA’s management trustees are working in close partnership with their union trustee counterparts to insure that our apprenticeship and training programs are meeting the true needs of Ohio’s highway-heavy construction contractors. The Ohio Operating Engineers Apprenticeship & Training Program has established a process that allows you to evaluate your Operator Apprentices. We are encouraging all OCA contractor members who employ apprentices to participate. The Apprenticeship Program would like to register the company name, address, and primary contact for apprentice & training issues, for all companies who employ their apprentices. The following link will take you to the form, so you may share your contact information with the Apprenticeship program. The link utilizes Microsoft Office Forms.
Once the Apprenticeship Program has your contact information, they can send the survey for each apprentice employed by your company. Your company representative can then email the survey form to the company Superintendent/Foreman who is responsible for the apprentice. The supervisor can return the survey directly to the Apprenticeship Program and a copy will also go to the primary company representative. The survey information will be shared with the appropriate site coordinator at the Apprenticeship Program, and any appropriate response to the survey results will be made. It is hoped that within the first few weeks of placement, an initial survey will be sent. Then, as the apprentice continues employment, periodic surveys will be sent in order to have consistency in communication and the evaluation of apprentice performance on the jobsite. Should you have questions about the Apprenticeship Survey program, please contact Robert Seman at the Operating Engineers Apprenticeship & Training Center in Miamisburg, Ohio. His office telephone number is (937) 859-5211.
