Intel Development in Central Ohio
As you may already know, Intel is bringing an entirely new industry sector in Ohio with a statewide impact, one that will supply and provide opportunity to businesses throughout Ohio. The magnitude of this tech investment is the first of its kind anywhere in the Midwest and puts Ohio on the map for the entire technology industry. The initial capital investment of more than $20 billion will generate over:
- 3,000 Intel jobs earning an average of $135,000 annually
- 7,000 construction jobs over the course of the build
- Tens of thousands of additional support jobs including electricians, engineers, suppliers, restaurants, healthcare, housing, entertainment and more
While details are still emerging, early reports have indicated the development will require significant water and sewer infrastructure needs as well as major upgrades to Route 161 and other roadways. This transformative investment for Ohio will undoubtedly have positive impacts for the heavy/highway industry. OCA will share any further information as it becomes available.
SB277 - Gas Tax Repeal Bill Update
Early last week Governor Mike DeWine shared his perspective on the proposed bill. In an interview with a Statehouse media outlet, the Governor said that putting a portion of the state gas tax on hold would be a mistake. “Infrastructure is vitally important to the safety of the people who drive on the roads” he said. He went on to say “Infrastructure is vitally important to the economic development of the state and the creation of jobs. So, this is not the time to pull back in regards to infrastructure.” He went on to say “We have a bridge to build across the Ohio River, and we have a lot of things to do. The building of that bridge will take some state money. We hope to get a lot of federal dollars. I talked to (Kentucky) Gov. Beshear two days ago about this and we’re both optimistic that we could get federal dollars but we both realize that is going to take some state money. We have other needs across the state. So, I just think that (SB 277) would be a really, really not good idea.
Also last week OCA along with 60 other groups wrote to SB 277 sponsor Senator Stephen Huffman to convey our opposition to the bill. You can read the letter here –
We will continue to monitor this bill closely and share OCA’s opposition.
