2020 Convention in Maui - Important Updates/Deadlines

OCA Convention in Maui - Deadlines are Approaching
Additional resort refund information

OCA's registration deadline is November 22. The hotel's deadline is November 29, when all unreserved rooms will be released. If you wish to attend after this date, it will depend upon hotel availability. Note that we only have a handful of rooms left. IMPORTANT: After November 29, there will be no refund on your reserved rooms for the entire stay should you cancel, regardless of the hotel's policy. Once we release unused rooms, the Four Seasons will invoice OCA for any rooms canceled, and we will need to pass that cost back to the member who cancels.

OCA Convention in Maui - Optional Excursions

If you plan on going on any of our exciting excursions, you should register as soon as possible. Some excursions are nearly full. At the end of November, we have to make a decision to either go ahead with excursions, or cancel if there aren't enough people registered. These are wonderful excursions on land and water, and provide an interesting venue for networking opportunities.

Urgent Action Alert
Tell Congress to Oppose Unfair UNION Organizing Bill

Congress will soon vote on the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act. This bill is an unprecedented attempt to fundamentally change dozens of well-established labor laws to assist organized labor without any regard to their detrimental impact on workers, employers—union and open-shop—and the economy. If enacted, the PRO Act would completely upend decades of work to balance employee and employer rights and restrictions settled in courts, the National Labor Relations Board, and Congress.

The PRO Act’s most significant changes impacting the construction industry are:

• Eliminating “secondary boycott” protections that would allow unions to launch disruptive protests and pickets against any employer, even those having nothing to do with a labor dispute.

• Imposing a “backdoor card check” exception to employees’ well-established right to a secret ballot election where they can freely vote their choice without intimidation by employer or union;

• Codifying the “quickie” or “ambush” election rules that limit employees’ access and opportunity to consider information about the union seeking to represent them;

• Expanding joint employer liability that could alter well-settled subcontracting practices in the construction industry;

• Hindering contractors’ ability to secure legal advice on complex labor matters; and

• Establishing an overly restrictive independent contractor test.

Already, this legislation has 216 cosponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives and 40 cosponsors in the U.S. Senate. Tell your U.S representative and senators to oppose the PRO Act today. OCA is working with our national affiliate, Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) to encourage input on this important proposal. Click on the following link, and you will be guided through an easy to use process in order to notify your elected officials in the House and Senate about this proposed legislation. If you have any questions about the Bill, please contact Mark Potnick in the OCA office.

Taking action is easy . Simply submit the pre-written message as is to your Representative and Senators or customize them with personal information on how this issue impacts you and your company.

Important Equipment Sale Tax Ruling

In a recent case heard before the Ninth District Court of Appeals in Summit County, the Court affirmed a prior Ohio Board of Tax Appeals’ determination that the purchases of traffic maintenance property by the contractor at the source of this case was exempt from Ohio sales and use tax under the resale exemption. This ruling has potential, major implications for contractors in the purchasing of certain traffic maintenance equipment for use on Ohio roadway construction projects. AGC and Autodesk Launch Program to Help Firms Provide Safety Harnesses Designed with Women in Mind
AGC Member Firms Can Apply for Grants through January 10, 2020

AGC of America and Autodesk are launching a new $75,000 grant program to help member firms provide safety harnesses for women. The grant program is designed to help firms attract more women into the construction profession while continuing to meet the highest levels of workplace safety. As part of that effort, winning firms will be selected based on their ability to leverage relatively small grant awards to attract more women and provide them with appropriately-sized safety harnesses. AGC is accepting applications until January 10, 2020. Click "here" for more information about the grant program and how to apply.
